How to Take Up Space Unapologetically / by alyssa aparicio

When I say power is a practice, I mean it. And freestyle movement has been one of the most life changing practices of empowerment for me.

After a whole year without dancing in stilettos, the freestyle you see below was birthed last week. As I watched it back, I could feel how all my dedication to Pussy Power has simply become part of me. No more striving, just being. Simply at home in myself. My cells at ease in conviction with who I am. There was no part of myself that was stuck in my head as I sprawled myself across that studio floor. I trust myself more than ever. Body, mind, spirit aligned.

It wasn’t always this way. I have faced off with body dysmorphia, self doubt, chronic overthinking, making myself small, boundaries crossed and more. But in this video I see so much growth. I see myself channeling a conviction that I have been continually cultivating, that I always knew I had in me. It took a long while to ground into this lack of apology. But these days, trusting my body to move freely feels like home. And I feel this same comfort in expression settling equally into my voice.

It’s no accident. I have been showing TF up. Each day committed more and more to being who I came here to be, or rather allowing myself to be fully who I am. The experience I have gained through practicing my expression with freestyle in the classroom and on stages has become the fabric of what I now teach.

How to Take Up Space Unapologetically

Here are the four elements of Pussy Power required to trust yourself to take up more space and free your unapologetic expression.

1. Know WHY:

Actively reflecting on why it is important to you that you express yourself will form the foundation of your conviction. Take some time to examine what it means for you and for the collective if you and more people like you felt free in their expression. Also, take some time to reflect on the limiting beliefs that you may have internalized from your family, as a result of the religion you were born into, your culture, race, class etc. (Alchemize Your Herstory).

2. Cultivate Presence:

The ability to inhabit your body, respond to intuitive guidance, and react to your environment requires you to be out of your head, and totally in the present. Given that our society elevates the thinking mind over the feeling body, this requires intentional practice to become a more habitual state (Surrender to Being).

3. Be Shameless

Liberating your body requires active untaming. That is shedding of puritan, colonialist, racist beliefs about your hips, which include your Pussy. Connecting with this part of yourself, embracing it as nature, and celebrating this part of yourself will undoubtedly liberate your expression of the parts of yourself that were previously weighed down by shame. Furthermore, unlocking your hips helps to free your voice simultaneously due to the unique connection between your Pussy and throat (Untame Your Wild Hips).

4. Practice Expressing Yourself

This is not a metaphor. In order to feel free in your body, you need to be physically comfortable with the space your body takes up. This requires a relationship with self that is present, supportive, and unapologetic. That kind of relationship doesn’t come out of nowhere! Finding and creating safe spaces to practice trusting and expressing yourself will strengthen the figurative muscle required to take up space on the regular (Parade Your Power).

To reiterate, these same elements required to take up space with your body apply to taking up space with your voice as well. The more you practice allowing yourself to be seen, the more you will see a difference in your relationship with being heard, and vice versa.

A Shoutout to my Mentor:

A very special thank you and shout out to Apollo Sa'Deek for holding this space for me in Ghetto Stiletto class. Apollo was first person to hold space tor my sexual expression and to create a sacred space in his classroom that always feels like home. He encouraged the spiciest depths of me to overflow and form the convicted person you see before you. Being part of the Official Ghetto Stiletto Gurlz has been a major part of my empowerment journey and I am so so so so grateful for the space Apollo holds.
